Alternate Universe Self

Do you ever wonder what the alternate universe version of yourself is up to?

In an alternate universe, where you made slightly different decisions — or others did — that changed your trajectory only slightly, or altered the course of your life in more major ways… where you’d be now, what you’d be doing, who you’d be with?

It’s different, I think, than wishing to change the past. I have a strict #alwaysforward policy, after all. It’s more of an existential curiosity about what would change if I chose different choices.

There’s essentially infinite possibilities in a world where each choice leads to alternate versions of the present reality.

In video games you can explore this to a degree. RPG video games in particular that have strong character development and plot progression built into them, where decision-making matters, in particular. Dragon Age: Origins and Witcher III come to mind. Reloading from a previous save and making a different pivotal choice may land you on a different path, with different companions, different outcomes, and experiencing different parts of the game entirely. Perhaps this is why I’m so drawn to this genre — you get to explore alternate versions of existence.

Unfortunately in real life you can’t reload from a previous save so you’re only left to wondering, on a dark rainy Vancouver night in November, if your alternate selves are also sitting by the fire alone with a tea and melancholy music playing in the background while they write.

Probably, but at least one of them chose to move to Mexico on a whim, and another one is drinking the good Scotch instead.

Do you ever wonder what your alternate universe selves are up to?

  1. What a lovely thought. Yes, I’ve also often wondered about my alternate selves. I like to think about the multiverse where they might be thriving.
