A New Story

There is nothing quite like the feeling of a clean blank page brought on by a new year.

Make it a new decade, even better.

This time at the turning of the year is meant to be a time for reflecting, but I am honestly weary of reflecting on the past. I’m thankful that I finished my “full circle” quest in the final months of 2019, as that gives me a feeling of completion, of having wrapped up a story that has progressed throughout pretty much the entire decade, since my wedding in the first days of 2010, to my marriage apocalypse just past the mid-point of the decade, to the last few years of focusing on healing and rebuilding.

A lot of other stuff happened in there too, of course, but this has been one of the defining stories of the decade for me. Which is why all I really want now is to follow the advice of the Birdtalker song and “leave what’s heavy, what’s heavy behind.”

I am beyond ready to leave 2019, and the 2010s in general, behind. I’m eager to move forward into a new decade with a steady heart, using this clean blank page to lay the foundation for a new story.

What will my new story look like? I don’t know yet, because the future is unknown, as usual. The only way to find out, like with any story really, is to start writing it.

“But one thing I do: forgetting what is behind and straining toward what is ahead, I press on…” Philippians 3:13-14
